Institute for Community Economics

The Institute for Community Economics (ICE) is a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution that makes loans for permanently affordable homeownership across the United States. ICE is the originator of the community land trust (CLT), a housing model that develops equity for homeowners while preserving public subsidy and affordability in perpetuity. Since our founding in 1967, ICE has assisted hundreds of grassroots organizations to build or rehabilitate thousands of units of permanently affordable housing in both rural and urban neighborhoods throughout the country.

In order to better position ourselves to support the increased demand for the CLT model and other forms of shared equity homeownership, ICE has taken a number of steps forward. In the fall of 2008, our Board of Directors approved our affiliation with the National Housing Trust (NHT). NHT is the leading national non-profit committed to preserving affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate income families. Since 1986, NHT has preserved more than 22,000 affordable homes across the country through public policy advocacy, real estate development, and lending. The ICE/NHT affiliation has the long-term goal of sparking collaboration and cooperation of the various sectors of the housing industry dedicated to long-term affordability.
